This is a declassified CIA intelligence report from 1973 about the Sary Shagan weapons testing range in the USSR. The report covers Soviet missile facilities, warhead specifications, and includes a secondhand account of an unidentified aerial phenomenon witnessed at the site. The information came from a former Soviet citizen interviewed by U.S. intelligence.
What was Sary Shagan?
Sary Shagan was a major Soviet weapons testing range that included multiple sites with specialized functions. The report describes facilities for checking warheads, regional headquarters, and security infrastructure. The range tested missiles including the System-75 (SA-2) and System-300/Aldan (ABM-1/GALOSH), which were antimissile defense systems.
What did the source report about warheads?
According to the source, the System-300/Aldan warhead was about two meters long and 80 to 100 centimeters in diameter, weighing roughly 400 kilograms. It contained black cassettes housing metal balls. System-75 warheads had approximately 100 grey cassettes, each holding 200 to 300 metal balls about 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The source stated that all work done by his department was experimental in nature.
What unidentified phenomenon was observed?
In late summer 1973, the source observed an unidentified bright green circular object or mass in the sky west of Site 7. Within 10 to 15 seconds, the green circle widened and formed several concentric circles around the mass. Within minutes the coloring disappeared. There was no sound associated with the phenomenon. The source had no opinion on what it was, and there were no resulting rumors about the incident.
